CALLING ALL CHORDVINERS – THE SUPERGROUP!!

‘If Ifs and Ands were pots and pans there would be no tinkers’ –quoting Rooshabh Doshi on 13th April 2005 when he kept listening to a friend play ‘If I were a Rich Girl’ by Gwen Stefani continuously on loop…and quoting Navjot Singh Sidhu… and quoting many other such wise sages over the centuries. But unfortunately , Ifs and Ands aren’t pots and pans, so I’m afraid we’re all allowed to live in our lil’ LALA-land where unicorns do run across lush green fields and rainbows do end in pots of gold and I get to front Iron Maiden for the rest of my life.

How often, have we as music enthusiasts dreamed of strumming the Fender Strat at Ozzfest in front of sell out crowds of 80,000 or have our name encrypted into the Rock n roll Hall of Fame or have rocker chicks scream out your name or even better, want you to sign your name on their……erm… notepads (what were you thinking eh??) :D. Ok, now before I let my imagination run a little too wild for The Chordvine Censor Board to run riot (Rishi, please be liberal) let me just get to the crux of the situation.

Now I know this topic has probably been discussed fairly on a lot of music forums and websites but I actually want to get to know my fellow Chordviners a little better, hence the title!!!! www.chordvine.com has been making waves with music lovers for months now, but if I do feel there is something missing, it’s the voices of You fellow Chordviners which I’m sure will keep us at the Chordvine team going. So brothers and sisters, I want to hear your voices more frequently in order to make this page more interactive than it already is. Ok, for starters, I could use some help here……

Before hitting the ol’ proverbial sack, I always picture myself playing for a band like Opeth or Dream Theater and what further exasperates me is that I know that my dream is what it is supposed to be, a dream. Now what I want to know is that am I the only daydreaming psycho who thinks of having a supergroup of my own or do you fellow Chordviners also empathize with me? If your answer is a yes, then I’m glad we’re on the same tangent. What is your idea of a Supergroup and what instrumental role (pun pun yay!!) do you have to play in the Supergroup???

In all honesty, I would love to front my supergroup, be the leader of a band that is studded with star- performers. I mean just think of Lukas Rossi writing songs on behest of Newsted ,Tommy Lee and Gilby, even though I’d hardly consider the latter a ‘star’ . Please pen in your thoughts of a Supergroup and lets see how ‘Super’ your supergroup can possibly be!!!!! Ok , lets make this a contest just for fun, to trigger you people’s competitive spirits. Now I can’t promise you’ll any prizes, maybe later if the boss allows me to gift out goodies to the best Supergroups, but if it acts as an incentive, the best supergroup wins the coveted ‘Roosh Rock n Roll Fame Award’…. NOW ISN’T THAT EXHILIRATING???? Ok…. I thought not…. Anyways, you’ll can only induct one member from a particular band into your supergroup… HERE GOEEESS!!! My Supergroup would consist of-

John Petrucci (Dream Theater) – guitar

Dimebag Darrel (ex-Pantera) – guitar-

Justin Chancellor (Tool) – bass

Per Wiberg (Opeth) – keyboard

Imran Khan (Parikrama) – violins

Neil Peart (Rush) – Drums

Rooshabh Doshi – vocals ………………… and if I were to be thrown out some day for O.D. ing in the midst of a show or for setting the stadium on fire just for fun or just being too crappy to play alongside these living legends , I’d replace me with

Mike Patton ( ex Faith No More, Mr.Bungle) – vocals.

Ideally I’d want this band to be a progressive rock/metal band with elements of jazz/blues/funk to it. I know it’s a huge ask, but if anyband can do it, I’m sure this band would pull it off. I know I might receive some flak for the inclusion of Dimebag into a progressive rock/metal band, but the man was quite frankly a genius and can adapt as and when needed. I’d love to see how late Dimebag with his face melting riffs and incredible shredding style would combine with Petrucci who relies more on skill, technique and weird time signatures and weirder riffs. Dimebag’s faster and heavier sound will bring the thrash aspect to this progressive metal band whereas Petrucci can get more into the technical and mellow aspect of it. I selected Justin on bass as TOOL is the most musically advanced band in rock and roll today and Justin Chancellor’s bass is one of the many apects of TOOL that elevates them over everyone else. Per Wiberg on Keyboards cause well… just listen to Silhouette, a 4 minute solo piece of Genius by Per which is why he makes the cut. I thought we could incorporate a desi flavour to the band with Imran on violins who could contribute to the whole progressive/fusion aspect of this band. Neil Peart on the drums because well, he is just simply one of the best drummers in the world. Mike Patton , (Faith No More) the replacement for Rooshabh Doshi simply makes the cut because of his 4 octave vocal range and his ability to just about do anything with his vocal chords whether it is a grungy scream to a Death style growl to a lil bit of Rap and when needed some Falsetto /crooning /chanting /beatboxing /scatting…… even lending his voice to those weird monsters in the movie , “I am Legend’…..I can go on forever….

So basically we have an Opeth meets Pantera meets Tool meets Parikrama meets Rush meets Faith No More meets Dream Theater which can only play in a theater of dreams and truly is a prospect that leaves you swallowing your tongue cause there’s no saliva left to swallow due to all the drooling , the line up has caused !!! Lame, but that’s how overawed I am right now just thinking of this Supergroup!!!! I’ll name them ‘Tirthankars’ after the 7 tirthankars of Jainism, the first being ‘Rishabh Deva’ (obviously, where the ex lead vocalist of the band gets his name from :D ) but its not even about me. Its about you oh Chordviners!!!! Getcha creative juices flowing and lets see if you’ll can do a better job of the Supergroup, cause that ‘Roosh Rock n Roll Fame Award’ is certainly feeling lonely on my shelf right now!!! Adios Amigos!!!!

I wanted to do a jazz supergroup, but since Rishi’s done it, I’m gonna do a classic rock one.

Guitars 1 + Vox: Eric Clapton
Guitars 2: + Vox: Mark Knopfler
Bass + Backing Vox: John Entwistle - no 2 ways bout that
Drums: Keith Moon - the most kick ass and fun Rock drummer ever
Keys: Richard Wright + backing vox - for tht slightly psychedelic feel

Is quite a weird mix up - blues, R&B and a psychedelic, but i think it’ll work.
