Miles From India, the album made by Indian Jazz veteran Louiz Banks that was out earlier this year has just received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Contemporary Jazz Album of the year. The album was created with a jazz-fusion backbone, and was dedicated to the life and works of the musical genius, Miles Davis.
The album featured over twenty musicians from India and around the world. The long line up included mandolin player U Shrinivas, ghatam legend ‘Vikku’ Vinayakram (Shakti), percussionists Sivamani and Taufiq Qureshi, and also the golden voice of Shankar Mahadevan amongst many others. Son Gino and close associate Ranjit Barot also played drums on the album.
The album was a fitting tribute to the late American musician, who is considered the founder of the genre of jazz-fusion, something which he introduced to the world on his milestone album Bitches Brew.
Here’s wishing Mr. Banks the best of luck, and hoping he would grab the Grammy.
