Black Sabbath’s Immortal Numbers - Part II

Black Sabbaths Immortal Numbers - Part IIThe Metal inventors carried the metal flame burning high through the seventies with original frontman Ozzy Osbourne. But, by the late seventies, Ozzy’s drug abuse became a big hindrance to the band’s professionalism. Hence, he was eventually removed from the band. From the period starting 1972 until the departure of Ozzy Osbourne, the band recorded some classic metal numbers. Here are some of them…

Supernaut

‘Supernaut’ contains one of Sabbath’s most famous riffs, which finds its way in the best rock riff list in many music magazines. The track even got the nod of the great Frank Zappa, who would go as far to call it the “greatest rock song of all time”.

Snowblind

There are some tracks that sound better with every listen. With ‘Snowblind’ the listener tends to find new avenues of interest every time the track is played.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Everyone loves a great story behind a track. Here’s the story behind this one. During the time of the release of the album of the same name (1973) the band was running out of ideas, and people weren’t reacting to their music as they used to when the band first appeared on the scene. To break the creative block, the band rented an actual castle and used it get some musical inspiration. This nasty track was concocted in the dungeons of the castle.

Sabbra Cadabra

‘Sabbra Cadabra’ was Sabbath’s metal tune which one could swing and jive along to. The song came into the limelight after many years, when thrash legends Metallica covered the song as part of their cover album ‘Garage Inc.’.

Hole In The Sky

For a band that created a trademark sound based around a gloomy sound, ‘Hole In The Sky’ introduced a more energetic and a brighter sound by the band. Perhaps it was the band’s way of stirring their ship in the right direction even more.

Symptom Of The Universe

‘Symptom Of The Universe’ = under rated. Yes most definitely it is. The song was written by bassist Geezer Butler, who claimed it was inspired by a dream he had relating vaguely to the creation of the universe. The slower portion of the track features a guest appearance by Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant.

Dirty Women

Tony Iommi was the band’s think tank, and was responsible for majority of the band’ s greatest numbers. ‘Dirty Women’ is yet another fine example of his brilliance, it is interesting to see how he switches between the rhythm and lead duties, without the absence of an additional guitarist being felt even on a single occasion.

Is there going to be a part 3? Black Sabbath had some excellent tracks with Dio (Falling of the edge of the earth, or The sign of the Southern Crosss, among others) and then Tony Martin (Headless Cross) too. :-)
