Justice Karnik is the newly crowned saviour of the Indian music scene, and he is yet to perform at HRC/Blue Frog .”To my untrained ear, both the musical works appeared to be similar” - How simpler does judging plagiarism get?So honoring the shift in the Indian music scene with its very first legal addendum to music plagiarism, we bring you 5 Songs you never knew were plagiarized.
1. R.D. Burman’s Aao Twist karein
This Bhoot Bangla track has been ‘inspired’ from Let’s twist again by Chubby Chucker.
2. Sholay’s Mehbooba
This tenaciously hit song has been picked up from Say you love me. To go back to the days of yore, listen to Mehbooba and judge for yourself.
3. Chalti ka naam gadi
Two popular lifts from Kishoreda’s Chalti ka naam gadi (1958). ‘Ek ladki bheegi bhagi si’ is inspired by the song ‘Sixteen Tons’ (1955), while ‘Hum the woh thi’ is inspired by the song ‘The Watermelon song’ (1957), both by Tennessee Ernie Ford.
Listen to Ek ladki bheegi bhagi si | Sixteen Tons
4. Laxmikant Pyarelal’s Om Shanti Om form Karz is a rip of Lord Shorty’s Shanti Om.
5. Mere Rang mein from Maine Pyaar Kiya
Raam Laxman went all over board trying to get all the notes from Europe’s Final Countdown to match.
p.s: i hope the bollywood-ish nature of this list would be excused.

Ram Sampat, along with Siddharth Achrekar were the brains behind Colourblind - one of India’s first ever rock bands, besides Indus Creed. Their only album is, in my opinion, one of the best rock albums this country has produced. This album is not available in stores any more but Siddharth has made the album free for download.
