Greatest Death Metal Bands

Although late to arrive into the metal world, death metal made a huge impact ever since it’s incarnation in the late 80’s. Born to black and thrash Metal, death metal has made heavy inroads and today boasts of having some of the most loyal fan following in the music kingdom. Here are some bands who pushed heavy metal to the extremities…

Morbid Angel

Any band that comprises the skills of Trey Azagthoth and Pete Sandoval is definitely worth their weight in gold. With death metal classics such as Altars of Madness and Blessed Are the Sick, Morbid Angel have already reserved their spot in the Metal Hall of Fame.

Death

If there ever was any confusion as to what qualified as death metal, one had to just pop in an album from the Death catalogue. With Chuck Shuldiner at the helm of the band, Death laid the foundation upon which the clear-cut pillars of death metal were raised.

Suffocation

Suffocation was late to arrive to the scene, but their timing couldn’t have been any better, for their arrival coincided with the growing impetus of death metal around the world. They would use this force to push their career forward and in turn would help to push the growing wave even higher. They pushed the idea of playing highly technical music to another level all together.

Obituary

The Florida based band is one of the easily acceptable bands and has a sound that appeals to even those outside the devotee category of fans. Although the band refrains from playing complex music, the band has stayed true to their hard-hitting sound. Vocalist John Tardy has one of the most easily distinguishable growls in extreme music.

Pestilence

The Dutch band propagated the idea of including jazz fusion elements into their sound, building a heavy sound around these jazz compounds rather than the other way around. The band split ways in ’94, but for those who missed them on the first trip, the band is back together and has hit the studio for recording a new album.

Master

While people most definitely would credit bands like Possessed or Death as the fore runners of death metal, Master have in their own silent way have done as much and in some ways more for the formation and growth of death metal. The band has had twelve releases till date, and if one is lucky enough to get hold of any of them it is advisable to keep them under a tight arm.

Vader

Vader are till date one of the most respected metal bands, earning the admiration of bands and inspiring bands of sub genres beyond death metal. Being hugely instrumental in shaping the European extreme metal sound, Vader has led the way for bands wanting to create a largely original sound and surpass the norms of heavy metal.

Krisiun

Brazilians are pretty dam passionate about their music and really enjoy it heavy. Krisiun have head-banged right through the grunge era and made it through with more ear splitting music than ever before. Krisiun are soon becoming favorites at Euro Metal fests the year around.
