Maiden’s Greatest Part I

Iron Maiden are easily one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time. As forerunners of the British metal invasion, the band have touched the figure of 80 million albums sold world wide in a career spanning over three decades. The first part of the list covers everything from their self titled debut, till their fourth album Piece of Mind (1983).

Killers

The title track of the 1981 album is one of the best works by Maiden from the Paul Di ‘Anno era. The song

would help the band shape their trademark sound, which would be paralled throughout the band’s career.

Wrath Child

Wrath child features the band at it’s heaviest and aggressive best. Critics would hold that Maiden could not match the rawness of this track post Di’Anno.

Iron Maiden

The band’s self titled song from their self titled album, would become one of the most played metal anthems of all times. No Maiden concert is complete without the song being played, to bring the show to an end.

Phantom of the Opera

Phantom would be Maiden’s marathon song noted for it’s varying passages, from slow muted riffs, to harmonic solos, to fast riffing again back to solos. The song has remained an all time Maiden favorite.

Charlotte The Harlot

The song would make Charlotte the most famous prostitute in the world, regardless of whether she existed or not. It also displayed Paul’s ability to tackle the more mellow tracks as well.

Run to the hills

Run to the hills is a crowd favorite, and is one of the first songs that come to mind when remembering Iron Maiden. It’s tribal drum beats at the intro make it easy to mark out the song from anything else from the band’s vast catalogue.

The Number of the Beast

Ask a Maiden fan his favorite song, majority would go with The Number of the Beast. Dickinson’s high pitched wail on the intro has achieved an iconic status. People would kill to hear him replicate it to the dot live.

Hallowed Be Thy Name

Hallowed be thy name, comprises everything a metal band is on the look out for. With catchy guitar lines, great vocals and a theme to match them, the song is metal at it’s best.

Flight of Icarus

The band’s radio friendly track is outstanding to say the least despite it’s radio tag. Dickinson’s vocal command is inspiration enough for budding singers. Dave and Adrian’s guitar work on the track is brilliant and complements the vocals aptly.

The Trooper

It is quite likely to like a song at a point in time and than dislike it sometime in the future. But, as far as memory goes The Trooper has always sounded forcefully good.

Only true maiden fans can appreciate Maiden’s stuff before Dickinson!!!! I love the first two albums as they have that exuberant punk-metal like feel to it and does not have that trademark Maiden gallop in it!!! Most Maiden songs post Di anno have those power chord gallops throughout the verse and the choruses. I love Killers and Iron Maiden cause they have more guitar licks and guiitar leads in them (leaving out the solos) than the rest of the albums cause at the end of the day Maiden’s all about the leads man!!!!!

‘Murders in the Rue Morgue’ is another kickass song which should be heard from ‘Killers’ !!!!
