Maiden’s Greatest Part III

Iron Maiden is one of the longest surviving proponents of Heavy Metal, presently in their fourth decade of existence. It’s been surprising how the band has managed to maintain the quality of the music at a steady level for so many years. The band has rocked on through the quite 90’s and made it into the new millennium with their heads held high. The third part of the list touches upon the band’s material from the last 13 years.

The Wicker Man

The song marked the comeback of Adrian Smith and Bruce Dickinson, both integral members of the band and instrumental in the band’s success. The track brings back memories of the band’s heyday magic.

Ghost Of The Navigator

The second track of 2000’s Brave New World brought a fresh breeze into the band’s music. It soon became clear that the band would henceforth adopt modern infusions into their sound but at the same time not hampering too much on their original sound.

Paschendale

The track is one of lengthiest Maiden tracks in recent times. The length of the track enables the slow and gradual build up to the heavier mid sections, something that the band has made a habit of doing lately, and are managing to pull it of really well.

The Longest Day

The band has made a career out of making songs about epic wars. But, there are few better than this savage track from the band’s 2006 album A Matter of Life and Death. When it comes to telling war stories, no one does it better than Iron Maiden.

The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg

Mammoth is the best word that can be used to describe ‘The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breed’. The track will go down as one of the most powerful and hair-raising Maiden songs of all time.

Brave New World

Written in 2000 the band set back time to the 1980’s with this track, shrugging of the pressure of market demand. Ultimate Maiden bliss!

Being a complete Maiden nuthead, i feel there were quite a few tracks other than the ones above that would definitely be included on a Greatest list:

From Brave New World:
- Dream of Mirrors: For its initial clean to massively heavy build up and the melodies that kick in towards the middle. Harks back to the Maiden of the late 80s, and is the first track on the album that really showcased the impeccable 3-guitar line-up.
- Nomad: For the egyptian touch, and being the song that marked the band’s change in sound that would ultimately result in Dance of Death, and gave the first ideas for what to expect on AMOLAD.

From Dance of Death:
- Dance of Death - This is a straight up epic. Beautiful storytelling.
- Journeyman - Maiden’s second unplugged track, much better when seen live on the Dance of Death DVD.
- No More Lies - The 3 back to back solos, and one headbanging mofo of a song.

From AMOLAD:
- For the Greater Good of God: The first track on the album that takes you back to the Maiden of old, and for the lovely harmony added by Janick on the chorus. Or was it Dave? You can immediately visualise Gers going crazy when playing this live.

Oh, and obviously, how could i forget the albums with Blaze?

You cannot have a Maiden’s greatest without including ‘Sign of the Cross’, ‘The Clansman’, or ‘Lord of the Flies’. And, no matter which vocalists version you prefer, they’re just excellent songs.
