5. Physical Graffitti - Led Zeppelin

The stark sepia toned photograph of the album art had cutaway windows in the LP version – As the inner sleeves for the discs are inserted in different combinations, various objects and people would appear in the windows, including photos of the band members in drag.

4. Wish You Were here - Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd could easily dominate this list all by itself. The famous handshake with the burning alter ego was said to signify the band’s original frontman, Syd Barret, whose demise was supposed to be the album’s main theme.

3. Achtung Baby - U2

The album during whose recording U2 nearly broke up, and rock’s foray into postmodernism and its high jinks, the pastiche like smorgasbord of the album art was as vivid and iconic as the album in it.

2. The Beatles - The White Album

The white album was seminal in more ways than one. And so was its album art. Or rather, the lack of it. Richard Hamilton’s brilliant, stark opposite of Peter Blake’s equally iconic design for their last album, Sgt. Pepper’s is what gave the album its name. Mysterious and minimalist, it’s something of a landmark not only as far as cover art is concerned, but in graphic design as a whole.

1. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

The only thing more famous than George Hardie’s iconic refracting prism is… hang on, there’s nothing more iconic.
